Raised with limited peer interaction, Ernestine St Bennett has difficulty interpreting social cues. At twenty-five she's become a loner; a shy nerd immersed in her scientific studies, whose best friend is her pet fish, Waldo.
Then Ernestine meets Simon Prime, who's obviously a nerd, too! Sympathizing with his social dysfunction, Ernie decides to help poor Simon increase his self-esteem and thus enhance his social standing. Using principles learned in her fish studies, she'll simply turn Simon from meek to macho.
What Ernestine doesn’t know (but Waldo suspects) is that Simon Prime is really ex-cop, private investigator Sam Pierce in disguise. A man who definitely doesn’t need his masculinity enhanced!
"Ms. Paul keeps the chuckles rolling fast and furiously in this diverting romance." --Romantic Times
"A compelling and touching love story. The misguided Ernestine is a completely unique heroine and watching Simon/Sam fall for her is great fun. Highly original." --Rendezvous

I wish I had had Ms. Paul as my high school biology teacher. The texts would have been a lot more interesting to read. Her research and humorous way of combining events made this more than an entertaining read. She took a story about deception and wove it into an intriguing show of the consequences. The non-verbal communication occurring among the characters was priceless. Ernestine being chaperoned by a fish, Waldo, should have been too ridiculous to be a story, but it works tremendously well. There are times when Waldo upstages the hero, Sam.Ms. Paul is not a writer. She is a word artist.

The Reluctant Nerd edition by Sandra Paul Romance eBooks Reviews
A charming romance! Our heroine is an awkward genius who talks to her fish and spouts great facts about animal sexuality and is kind. Our hero is undercover as nerd...enough said.
The love that grows between these two is genuine. The plot is a bit silly but a nice frame for the romance.
We have a clean romance with only a great make out scene. The fish is awesome. The couple time is grand.
It could use a little updating with the VHS reference but everything else works well. The ending could be a little bit more but all in all a really pleasure fest of a read.
Reading this book taught me something very important. I really dislike romantic comedy books. I guess they are okay for movies- but no- not to read. I did try, but no- just not for me. It just wasn't something I enjoyed.
I don't know really what I expected from reading the synopsis, but most certainly not this boring predictable romance. I expected a little more excitement. Well, the fish was fun, the female protagonist not so much. And the ending was soooo predictable!
Simon/Sam was however a great character, that's why I give it 2 star rating instead of just one
I didn't care for this book, and deleted it from my library.
Purchased as a freebie on . This was a unique, fun read with some very interesting characters, a quirky plot and a unique romance. Not your typical female protag - with a name like Earnestine, I figured she'd be different. She's a smart scientist who is socially inept. Simon/Sam is an undercover detective, dressed as a nerd and hating every minute of it. Earnestine decides to help Simon come out of his 'shell', and it leads to some very funny moments as Sam flounders to juggle his disguise, his investigation and his growing attraction to Earnie.
Earnie's character was refreshing - she's not a dumb female protag making dumb choices to move the plot forward. She is intelligent, socially awkward, and talks at length to her pet fish, Waldo. The dynamic between her and Sam was very funny at times, with a few Lucy/Ricky Ricardo moments. There were also some heartstring pulling moments.
For those that prefer the tag, this is a 'clean' romance.
This book was quite funny and enjoyable. It was long enough to develop the characters nicely and while the secondary plot wasn't nearly as developed as it could have been, the primary plot, the relationship between Ernestine and Sam/Simon was well done.
There were several places where I laughed and could just picture the banter between the two characters which is always welcomed by the reader. I'm always a lover of epilogues, so a bit more of "what happened after" would have been nice, but overall, I'm really glad I read this book and would certainly read more from this author.
The Reluctant Nerd is a very funny book written by author Sandra Paul.
I owned this book a long long time ago and it was what started me in the romance genre. I let a friend borrow it and it was never returned. Since then (5 years ago) I have been looking for it. Thank you!!
